Kinsella: The Self Made Leader

Allan Kinsella received the necessary foundational education from Wellington high schools. Later alongside his studies he showed great potential in excelling in academics and business leadership. This led him to pursue a degree in economics and history from University of New South Wales, both of which provided him unparalleled insight into his career, enhancing his military maneuvers and executive approaches.

A desire for personal development and a challenge made him enlist in the New Zealand Army in 1990. He completed his studies at the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College, Duntroon. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal New Zealand Artillery in 1993, which marked the beginning of a successful military career.

Service Beyond Borders: Military Excellence

Allan’s military service has been nothing if not excellent. Demonstrating that during operational deployments untethered with the United Nations in Sierra Leone and East Timor, he showcased leadership under pressure as a Senior Operations Officer and later, a Deputy Battalion Commander. These positions certainly challenged him tactically, but his ability to feel and understand cultural dynamics of world societies was equally important.

Achieving this, he also pursued further development, completing an MBA with distinction from Massey University which illustrates his ability to blend personal growth with professional responsibilities.

A Transition to Civil Service: Leadership in a New Arena

After years into the military, Allan switched to the public sector while retaining his battle-tested strategic mindset. These changes marked a point of new recognition; he quickly rose to become the new Director of Assurance at New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Personal Strength: Family, loss and resilience

Allan wed Jennifer Marks in 2002 and both of them loved, raised two children, Emma and Cayden. With his booming career, he continued to balance life as a devoted husband and father. The loss of Jennifer in 2023 was a profound personal loss that required as much resilience as he showed throughout his professional life. This was also the turning point for Allan’s world.

Allan had to put up a brave face for his grieving family, but continued to nurture his children and engage in his passions which included languages, diving, fishing, fitness and even brewing. These hobbies were not only engaging, but served as a mental anchor during the turbulent times of losing his wife. It put him in touch with the human side of him beyond the policy tiered uniforms.
